CANTON - A late-night thunderstorm struck much of St. Lawrence County, affecting Canton and Potsdam among other municipalities.
A road closure just east of Canton along Route 11 was confirmed but central dispatch was unable to confirm the extent of work required.
The Potsdam Fire Department said that there were several lines down but no fires were reported as of midnight. The Canton Fire Department said the same, including that no major incidents had occurred as of midnight.
Both groups were responding to several calls throughout the night.
According to the National Weather Service web site, at 10:51 p.m. a flash flood warning was issued to Central St. Lawrence County to run through 2:45 a.m. Thursday. The web sites radar estimated that two to three inches of rain had already fallen by 10:45 p.m. in the warned areas with additional thunderstorms moving into the county.
Locations in the warning area include but are not limited to Canton, Hannawa Falls, De Peyster, and Potsdam, the flash flood warning read.
The Potsdam hourly forecast calls occasional thunderstorms and showers during the day Thursday with an 80-percent chance of precipitation.
National Weather Service states that a flash flood warning is instituted when flooding is imminent or occurring and immediate action must be taken to protect life and property.
