Ogdensburg International Airports $3 million-plus repaving of its 5,200-foot-long runway could start this year.
The work is weather and time-dependent, Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority Executive Director Wade A. Davis said Wednesday after his board unanimously endorsed a $3.4 million U.S. Department of Transportations Federal Aviation Administrations Airport Improvement Program grant to cover 95 percent of the cost of the $3.6 million project. The repaving, which will be done by Barrett Paving, Norwood, for $3.2 million, will take three months to complete.
The work will be done at night so as not to interrupt Cape Air commuter flights or any other aviation activity at airport.
Mr. Davis said there is a possibility that the repaving will not begin until next year. The timetable will need to be worked out between Barrett and the projects designers, C&S Engineers.
Mr. Davis also it would be later this month or sometime in October when the authority receives a consultants feasibility study on expanding the airports runway and terminal.
McFarland-Johnson, Binghamton, was hired last spring for a fee of $89,283.
The authority is keen to expand the length of the runway from 5,200 feet to 6,000 feet in order to take in larger commercial airplanes, thus making the airport on Route 812 busier and, ultimately, a profitable enterprise.
Board chairman Samuel J. LaMacchia said the runway repaving grant is a start, that the FAA which will have to sign off on the expansion plans realizes that the OBPA is serious about improving the airport.

OBPA and the federal Department of Transportation will each contribute a 2.5-percent share of $90,050 to the cost of the repaving.
