Heuvelton FD gets used OBPA fire truck

Heuvelton Volunteer Fire Department has acquired the Ogdensburg International Airport’s used 23-year-old fire truck.

On Wednesday, the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority board voted 6-0 in favor of donating the custom-built vehicle to the village fire department, which already has two pumper trucks, a rescue vehicle and two water tankers.

Last month, the authority took delivery next week of a new fire truck, a custom-built, $282,000 model that to replace the old one.

Authority Director of Operations Steven J. Lawrence said the old model is breaking down and becoming a liability with age. Its only possible remaining uses, he added, are wash-downs and dust control with its water-spraying capabilities.

Heuvelton Fire Chief Mark Basford said the department has plans for the truck.

“The truck could be useful to our department, either on its own or it could be utilized in a refurbishment project that we are working on with our own truck” he said in an Aug. 14 letter to OBPA Executive Director Wade A. Davis.

Along with the Ogdensburg Fire Department, Heuvelton is a first responder to emergencies at the airport.
