LISBON - Code enforcement officer Christopher J. Sherwin is now working 19 hours per week in an effort to ensure he can stay in the position regardless of the results of a civil service exam.
The new schedule, adopted by the town council on Thursday, keeps him listed as a part-time employee because he will be working less than 20 hours a week. Because he is now technically a part-time employee it also exempts him from needing to take the state exam.
When the test is given we have to take [one of the] top three or else put him back as a part-timer, Town Supervisor James W. Armstrong said.
Under the new arrangement the town doesnt need to worry about whether or not Mr. Sherwin performs well on the exam.
Prior to May Mr. Sherwin was working between 12 and 15 hours per week at $18 per hour. In May the town council approved increasing his hours to 24 hours per week on a provisional basis until he can take the civil service exam.
But town budget officer William E. Dashnaw suggested making Mr. Sherwin a part time employee again to keep things simple for the town.
Mr. Dashnaw said Mr. Sherwin can work more hours during the summer to keep up with busy building seasons but then do less in the winter to even it out.
Mr. Dashnaw also suggested making the position salaried instead of dependent on an hourly wage. That would allow the town to drop Mr. Sherwins hours without reducing his salary, Mr. Dashnaw said.
Including a two percent raise planned for the 2014 fiscal year, Mr. Sherwin will be making $24,975 a year.
I think hes done a good job, Town Councilor Alan D. Dailey said, supporting the maneuver.
Mr. Sherwin said he still plans on taking the exam which he expects to be offered in June because it could help his career in the future.
The town council was unanimous in its support for the new arraignment.
