GRAND LARCENY - MASSENA - Village police charged Adam B. Aubrey, 20, of 373 Hurley Road, Brasher Falls, with fourth-degree grand larceny, three counts of second-degree forgery and three counts of petit larceny at his residence at 2 p.m. Saturday following an investigation into the theft of a credit card.
Police said Aubrey was babysitting for Jessica Hill Sept. 10 at 27 Park Ave. when he took a credit card that he found. He then used the card to purchase $973.72 worth of merchandise - tires and two Wii games, ice cream valued at $2.30 from On A Roll Deli and a $16 cab fare from Massena to his residence.
He was arraigned by Massena Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond.
Ms. Hill, in the statement she provided to police, said she had allowed Aubrey to watch her daughter that day while she was at work. She said Aubrey had texted her about an hour after she went to work to inform her she had left her debit card on the coffee table at her residence. She said she responded by texting back, You left my debit card alone right?
She said Aubrey never responded to her query, but he sent her message a few hours later telling her the debit card was still on her coffee table when he left her apartment. But she said she searched her home when she returned home and was unable to find it.
My daughter told me that Adam took her to the store and bought a couple of Nintendo Wiis, two vehicle tires and a few things for (her) totaling around $1,000, Ms. Hill added in her statement, noting one of his friends told her Aubrey had then attempted to return the merchandise for gas.
Police said Walmart officials were concerned by the return transaction - since the merchandise had only been purchased moments earlier - and refused to give Aubrey a cash return. Instread, they cancelled the transaction for the purchase of the items and placed the money back on Ms. Hills card.
Aubrey, in the statement he gave police, admitted he had used Ms. Hills card to purchase items at the three stores. He said he took Ms. Hills daughter to On A Roll and bought ice cream. He said the duo were joined by his friend, Ben Lapp, when they walked to Triple A so he could see how much it would cost to get his vehicle back.
After that the three of us called a cab and went to Walmart. While at Walmart, I bought four tires and two Wii Us, which cost $1,041. After I bought these items, I immediately returned them and the money went back onto the card. I left Walmart and walked back to Jessicas house with (her daughter). Once I got back to Jessicas residence, I contacted Massena Transport to pick me up and take me to 373 Hurley Road. I then used the credit card again for the taxi ride, which cost $16.
