Akwesasne man jailed after back to school ‘shopping spree’

PETIT LARCENY - MASSENA - An unemployed Akwesasne man was jailed Monday following a back to school “shopping spree” at Walmart, where he allegedly stole more than $500 worth of merchandise.

Village police charged Jacob A. Cook, 36, of 84 Moses Cook Road with petit larceny following a shoplifting incident at approximately 5 p.m. Monday at the Massena Walmart.

“ I, Jacob A. Cook, stole the clothes from the Massena Walmart for my kids,” he said. “I stole the clothes because I wanted them to have new clothes for school so they did not have to run around in last year’s clothes.”

When asked why he stole the clothes, Mr. Cook replied, “I stole the clothes because I have no job, but I have been looking for one,” according to court documents.

He was arraignedby Massena Town Justice Gerald P. Sharlow and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $1,000 cash.

According to court documents the stolen merchandise included both men’s and boy’s apparel totaling $571.60 in value.
