Morley man charged in Social Security forgery

CANTON — A Morley man is being charged in the theft and forgery of a neighbor’s Social Security check.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies charged Scott C. Simmons, 25, of 134 Church Street, with two counts of petit larceny and one count of third-degree forgery in connection with the stolen check.

Deputies allege that Mr. Simmons stole the Social Security check from the mailbox of neighbor Robert Wright, 51, of 132 Church St., but said the amount of the check was not disclosed in a deputy’s report.

Mr. Simmons then allegedly forged the victim’s signature to cash the check.

The charges are all class A misdemeanors, placing the amount of the check less than $1,000, otherwise Mr. Simmons would have been charged with fourth-degree grand larceny charge, a felony.

The nature of the relationship between the two men and how Mr. Simmons knew to look for the Social Security check is unknown, deputies said.

Deputies said the United States Postal Inspector has also been notified.

Mr. Simmons was issued appearance tickets for the charges and is due to appear in Canton Town Court at a later date to answer to the charges.
