Adams- Bernard L. Edwards, 90, Grove St., Adams, passed away Saturday, September 14th at the Hospice Residence at the Ellis Farm.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, September 17th from 5 pm – 8 pm at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville. Graveside services will be 11 am Wednesday, September 18th at Rural Cemetery, Adams, with Rev. Walter Giles officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham St., Watertown, NY 13601 or to the South Jefferson Rescue Squad, Adams, NY 13605.

Bernard was born July 4th, 1923 in Adams, a son to Ernest and Anna Harwood Edwards. He worked on the family farm during and after his schooling in Adams until entering the US Army during WW II, serving in the European Theatre of Operations. After his honorable discharge from the military, he returned to the North Country and worked for Louis Harwood Trucking.

Bernard went to work for Waite Toyota in 1951 as a mechanic, retiring in 1994 after 43 years of service.

Bernard was a member of the Adams VFW. He was an avid bowler and golfer, participating in several leagues in the area. He was a pitcher in the local fast pitch softball league for many years. Bernard umpired Babe Ruth baseball for several years.

He married Barbara Prouty September 18th, 1948 in Ellisburg.

Besides his wife, Barbara, Bernard is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Jeffrey Peck; a son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Carla Edwards, all of Adams. Four grandchildren, Derek and Chad Edwards, Samantha Cook and Catherine Towles. Three great grandchildren, a nephew Fred Cole of Adams, and several nieces and nephews.

Bernard was predeceased by a son, Bernard R. “Bernie”, July 20, 1996, a grandson David Towles, October 31, 2009 and three sisters, Margaret Cole, Vernice Bowman and Vera Beattie.
