Birthday: Betty Murtagh celebrated her upcoming 90th birthday with an open house Aug. 10 at the Winthrop American Legion. She was joined by more than 100 friends and family, including nieces and nephews who travelled from Memphis, Tenn., Charlotte, N.C., and Galway, Ireland. A special birthday song was composed and sung to her.

Mrs. Murtagh, who turns 90 on Sept. 29, says what has kept her going for so many years is, “I live by the three F’s: faith, friends and family.” She adds, “Of course a good Manhattan and a few good laughs help.”

Honored: Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, recently named Tandy Ashley, Carl Palmisano and Doug Turner as employees of the quarter.

Ms. Ashley joined CPH in 1989 in the accounts payable/payroll office. She served as hospital accountant and became administrative assistant to the vice president for finance in 2000.

Mr. Palmisano joined CPH in 2010 as a sterile-processing technician. After a year, he accepted his current position of operating room aide.

Mr. Turner joined CPH in 2008 as a phlebotomist in the laboratory. Within the past year, he joined the information systems department as a support technician.

Finalist: Joseph Haas, Chaumont, was named a finalist in Trucking’s Top Rookie Contest. Winners were named Aug. 23 at the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas. Mr. Haas graduated from National Tractor Trailer School in Liverpool. A former farmer, he has been a team driver with Swift Transportation, Syracuse, since January.
