Martinsburg: Daniel J. Riley, 57. of 5612 Francis St. and formerly of Port Leyden, died Saturday Sept. 14 in St. Lukes Health Care Center, New Hartford after a long illness.
He was born in Lowville June 6, 1956 the son of John ( Jack) and Sally Mashaw Riley and was a 1975 graduate of South Lewis Central School, Turin. He was employed as a paper maker at Georgia Pacific Corp and Lyons Falls Pulp and Paper. He was most recently employed at Lewis County Dairy in Lowville until he retired due to illness.
He married Shelly Egelston Aug. 28, 1976 in St. Marks Episcopal Church, Port Leyden. She died Jan. 8, 2010.
He was a former member of Port Leyden Fire Dept and Boonville Elks. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking. He was instrumental in getting the Dialysis Unit built and operating at Lewis County General Hospital.
He is survived by one son, Daniel, Sarasota, Fl. His mother Sally, Port Leyden, four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Amy Gorczyca, Utica, Maureen and Bruce Stowell, Clarksvillle, Tn. Sandy Riley, Port Leyden and Margaret and Bob DiOrio, Old Forge. Also surviving are two Grandchildren Alexis and Ryan, Lowville, whom he helped raise; One Aunt and Uncle Barbara and Dick Shue; three sister-in-law and one brother-in-law, Valerie and Carl Emerson, Port Leyden, Lori Ziegler and Sandy Egelston, both of Boonville. nieces and nephews and many cousins.
The funeral will be Wed at 1:00 p.m. at the Callaghan Funeral Home, LLC, Port Leyden with Assistant Pastor, Jim Trainham, of the Bethel Nazarene Church, Lowville and Pastor Joan Ripp, co-officiating. Burial will be in Port Leyden Cemetery.
Friends may call Wed. from 11 until 1 at the funeral home, prior to the service.
Donations in his memory may be made to the dialysis Unit at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, attention to Ed Ingersoll.
A reception will be held after the funeral at the Port Leyden Community Center.
