Trial over alleged illegal Hogansburg casino postponed for third time

AKWESASNE - The federal trial of five men charged with operating an unsanctioned casino on the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation has been postponed a third time.

The trial of James Gray, William Roger Jock, Anthony L. Laughing Sr. and Thomas Angus Square, all of Akwesasne, as well as Joseph Hight of Atlanta, was supposed to begin Monday in U.S. District Court, Albany. It is now scheduled for Oct. 29. Court documents do not show the reason for the delay. A trial initially was set for Feb. 11 but was pushed back twice.

The government alleges the men conducted a non-tribal gambling business and unlawfully possessed gambling devices in Indian country in connection with the operation of Three Feathers Casino, which opened in July 2011. The facility was closed in September of last year; a raid was conducted at the site in December, resulting in numerous charges against the five defendants.
