M-W, Hammond boys; Tupper Lake, Hammond girls reach Rose finals

MADRID - Madrid-Waddington Boys Soccer Coach Jeff Stein felt very fortunate after his Yellowjackets survived another stern NAC East Division test from Colton-Pierrepont, 1-0 on Thursday.

“The Colts are very dangerous. Both times we played them it was really close,” said Stein as his Yellowjackets advanced into the championship game of the Dan Rose Memorial Tournament on Saturday (11 a.m.) with the win. “(C-P) only has 12 available but those 12 are very solid. We fortunate to come out with a win today.”

M-W will now get set to take on Hammond which played Heuvelton to a 2-2 NAC West Division tie but advanced to the title game vie a 5-3 decision in penalty kicks. Both the tournament final and consolation game are slated for Saturday at 11 a.m.

M-W 1, C-P 0: Aaron Armstrong finished off a cross from David Odenhahl in the 71st minute for M-W (5-1 5-0) to account for the only goal in the win over the Colts (1-4-1, 1-3-1). TJ Gagnon made six saves for the shutout. Bruce Avery handled nine shots in the losing cause.

“Today, I brought up some JV players to see what they could do. Aaron and David are two of those. They played extremely well,” Stein noted. “Their keeper was tough because he was very mobile.”

Hammond 2, Heuvelton 2 (Hammonds wins shootout 5-3): Tristen Simons opened the scoring in the 10th minute from Matt Martin for Hammond (2-2-1, 2-2-1) but Heuvelton (1-2-1, 1-2-1) answered back when Joe McDonnell scored from Jordan Macaulay and Will Tennant connected from Macauley in the 16th and 29th minute of play.

Brock Tulley forged a 2-2 tie from Martin in the 70th setting the stage for overtime and penalty kicks where Hammond won 5-3.

Peyton Frisina, Zach Howie, Tulley, Alex Folkeeson, and Martin scored penalty kicks. Dylan Liscum, Andrew Streeter and Aiden Scagel connected for Heuvelton on the penalty kick.

Nick Jewitt and Colton Tate shared the crease for Hammond with 10 saves. Zach Lashomb stopped nine shots for Heuvelton.

Tupper Lake and Hammond earned opening round wins in the girls division of the Rose Tournament.

Hammond earned a 2-1 win over Lisbon which also served as a NAC West Division contest. Tupper Lake advanced 1-0 on a second half goal over host Madrid-Waddington which also served as an East divisonal contest.

The championship game is slated for 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

Hammond 2, Lisbon 1: At Madrid, a pair of defensive breakdowns helped Hammond’s Courtney Bova to a pair of late first half goals after falling behind 1-0 to Lisbon.

Beth Crowley scored from Madeline Caufield in the 23rd minute for Lisbon (4-1-1, 3-1). Bova connected in the 35th and 40th minute both on breakways for Hammond (4-1, 4-1) which rebounded from its first loss of the season. Mikayla Horton and Paige Frisina drew assists on the Red Devils goals.

Jackie Sovie stopped 11 shots for Lisbon. Cassie Whalen made 14 stops for Hammond.

Tupper Lake 1, M-W 0: In a match-up of East Division foes, Lindsay Maroun scored unassisted in the 72nd minute for the 3-3, 3-2 NAC East Lumberjacks. Brooke Dewyea handled nine shots for Tupper Lake.

Ariana Ramsey and Marliana Bush (second half) combined to make 10 saves for the Yellowjackets (1-3, 1-2 NAC East).

“We knew it was going to be a tight game coming in. Tupper Lake just played a little better today,” noted M-W coach Gary Tischler.
