Gray: Town hall work comes in well under budget

MASSENA - Two recent projects at the town hall came in well under budget, even after more than $80,000 in additional work was added to one of them.

Town Supervisor Joseph D. Gray said the recent repaving of the town hall’s parking lot was expected to cost $168,000, but the work was completed for $125,353.26, approximately $42,650 under budget.

Recent renovations to the town hall, including repairs to the building’s front steps and facade, also came in approximately $70,000 under budget.

Mr. Gray said that project was expected to cost $335,000, but the work only ended up costing $269,168.32.

At the board’s most recent meeting, the town council approved $81,247.32 in additional work that Mr. Gray said would not have a negative impact on the project’s finances.

“Even with the change orders, we are about $70,000 under budget,” he said.

Mr. Gray said as work was underway at the historic downtown structure workers reported several other smaller repairs were also needed. “There were several items to be done that were not included in the original bid,” he said.

Those items included the addition of hand railings on the newly repaired steps at a cost of $1,380, the addition of weather repellent on the upper stone facade on the parking lot side of the building at a cost of $11,668.30, and the repointing of the foundation’s stone masonry on the alley side of the building at a cost of $28,409.81.

Three other additions to the project included an expansion joint, backer board, repairs to the bricks and the installation of a sealant on the alley side of the building for $7,266.98; repairs to windows in the attic and stripping of paint, assumed to be lead-based, at a cost of $10,436.85; and repairs to the building’s chimney, including the installation of a wire mesh cover and structural skin for $22,084.38.
