A 10th Mountain Division soldier based in Fort Polk, La., died Thursday in a non-combat-related incident.

Sgt. William D. Brown III, 44, served in the 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team.

His death in Gamberi, in eastern Afghanistan, is under investigation, according to the Department of Defense.

According to a news release from Fort Drum, Sgt. Brown joined the Army in May 2010. After completing training at Fort Jackson, S.C., he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Sgt. Brown arrived at Fort Polk in December. He deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in July.
