WADDINGTON – The Northern New York Bassmasters Club has enjoyed a bountiful season with its members routinely bringing huge bags to the weigh-ins at several bodies of water in any kind of weather.

The 2013 Club Championship Tournament capped the season with huge bags brought to the weigh-in at the Waddington Boat Launch despite cold, windy conditions on Sunday. On Saturday the anglers fared well on Black Lake despite heavy rains.

On Sunday Brad Paradis produced an historic catch landing the largest lunker in club history with a 7 lbs, 8 ounce pound smallmouth caught from the St. Lawrence River.

“We were fishing near Morristown and I was using a dropshot in 12 feet of water. When the fish first hit I didn’t think it was very big. But then it shook its head like the big ones do and when it started to move I knew it was real big,” said Pradis who teamed with his dad, Bob Paradis, to win Team of the Year honors in the regular season.

“The fish went under the boat and jumped on the other side. My dad made two stabs at it with the net and got it on the second one. Getting it in the boat was really exciting.”

There was one more moment of excitement and apprehension when the motor on Paradis’ boat wouldn’t start after they stopped to make a couple of final casts before going to the weigh-in.

“The wire on the starter was shreaded so I had to pull start the motor. The anchor rope was too thick so I unbraided it and wrapped a strand around the fly wheel. I gave it big pull and boy was I happy when it started.” said Bob Paradis after he and his son weighed in 21.93 pounds to take fifth overall in the tourney with 33.74 pounds.

While the Paradis-Paradis team produced the largest lunker in club history, a massive smallie which fell just 12 ounces short of the 8 lbs, 4 oz New York State Record smallmouth which was caught on Lake Erie, another father-son team in Heuvelton’s Chuck and Chris Roach won their first Club Championship Tournament in an intense matchup with the Ogdensburg team of Tim O’Grady and Steve Garrabrant.

The Roach-Roach team took first-day honors on Black Lake with a 16.18-pound bag and came in with a 20.93-pound bag on Sunday. O’Grady-Garrabrant weighed in 14.54 pounds on Saturday from Black Lake, with the First Day Lunker at 4.36 pounds, and finished at 35.75 pounds after landing 21.21 pounds on Sunday .

“We had a great season and great day but I lost a real big bass which might have made

the difference,” said O’Grady who wished to thank his team’s sponsors Hosmer’s Marina and Phoenix on the Bay.

“But that’s the way it goes. I am sure the other teams all lost big fish too.”

The Roach-Roach team prevailed by the advantage they gained on Saturday and protected it by targeting spots they have fished for years.

“We always fish for largemouth and Black Lake. We weighed in five largemouth on Saturday but we also caught nice smallmouth,” said Chuck Roach.

“On Sunday we finished between Coles and Creek and the Iroquois Dam.”

Another father and son team, John and Chris Flint of Potsdam, placed third at 34.64 pounds after landing Sunday honors with a bag of 22.89 pounds.

Carrie and Tyler Capella of Canton placed fifth at 33.74 pounds after weighing 20.47 pounds on Sunday.
