MADRID – Two of the top Class D teams in the state tangled on Dan Rose Field at Madrid-Waddington on Monday as the 15th ranked host Yellowjackets knocked off No. 9 Chateaugay 1-0 in an NAC East Division showdown.

“I told the team coming in that Chateaugay is a very good team and win or lose we would take something from it and move forward. Today, we played exceptional defense which started in the midfield and carried into the defensive end. Chateaugay has speed and skills and we were able to contain it,” said M-W coach Jeff Stein whose team is fresh off a Dan Rose Tournament championship.

And the Jackets had few chances in the game but made one count as Kaden Pickering redirected a ball in a scramble off a shot from John Lenney in the 46th minute.

“Neither team had two many good opportunities we just got lucky on ours,” said Stein of his 7-1, 6-0 Jackets.

TJ Gagnon made seven saves in the shutout while Josh Trombley tallied eight for Chateaugay which slipped to 3-1 on the season.

In the other East Division matchups on Monday, Norwood-Norfolk rallied to a 2-1 decision over Colton-Pierrepont, Parishville-Hopkinton turned back Brushton-Moira 2-1 and St. Regis Falls outlasted St. Lawrence Central 3-2 in overtime.

N-N 2, C-P 1:In Norfolk, the visiting Colts jumped out to the early lead after Noah Whalen finished off a play set up by Ethan Knight six minutes into the game.

Zeb Brown answered with the tying goal less than nine minutes later assisted by Ian St. Andrews then set up the game-winner by Brandon Palmer with 10:50 left in regulation as the Flyers battled back for their second straight win.

Garrett Waite had six saves goaltending the win as N-N improved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the division. Bruce Avery handled two shots for the Colts (1-6-1, 1-4-1).

P-H 2, B-M 1: In Parishville, the host Panthers worked their way to a 1-0 halftime lead then quickly countered the tying goal in the second half with the eventual game-winner.

Justin Frank opened the scoring off an assist from Wyatt Snell 17 minutes into the game for the lone goal of the first half.

The visiting Panthers pulled even in the 12th minute of the second half when Adam Martin took a pass from the right wing by John Planty, cut across the field then pumped a shot into the top right of the goal from 10 yards outside the penalty area on the left.

P-H regained the lead just over a minute later as Snell drew a tripping call just beyond the top of the bubble then slammed a low shot through a crack on the right side of the B-M wall and into the bottom right of the goal.

Kobe Wells made seven saves backstopping the win as the Panthers improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the division. Taylor Tallman fielded 10 shots for B-M (0-4-0, 0-4-0).

SRF 3, SLC 2 (OT): At St. Regis Falls, the teams traded leads before the host Saints rallied to tie the game in the second half then produce the win when Virawat Tansirikonghkon finished off a play set up by Ryan Duquette seven minutes into overtime.

Brandon Votra put the Saints on the board first when he converted from Louis Goodrow in the 27th minute. The Larries answered less than two minutes later when Blake Hence broke through for his first goal of the season and the teams went into halftime knotted at 1-1.

SLC took its only lead in the 20th minute of the second half on a goal by Tyler Kowalchuk that was set up by Paul Steenburg but the Larries were denied their second win of the season after Tansirikonghkon tied the game nine minutes later assisted by Tyler Fraser.
