Potsdam, Massena girls volleyball team halted; Salmon River drops E-K

The Potsdam Central and Massena Central varsity girls volleyball teams both saw their early-season win streaks brought to a halt on the road in NAC matches Tuesday night.

Chateaugay 3, Potsdam 2: In a matchup of undefeated division leaders, the East leading Lady Bulldogs overcame a 2-1 deficit by winning the final two sets 25-20, 25-10 in handing the West leading Lady Sandstoners their first loss in seven matches.

“Our girls worked hard right to the end. It was a very intense match,” noted Potsdam coach Julia Pahler.

The Lady Sandstoners took the opening set 25-15 but dropped the second 25-15 before regrouping to win the third 25-15. Sarah Vivlamore served up a team-high 14 points, including one ace, in the losing effort. She also blocked four shots and recorded 25 assists off 67 sets. Victoria Mondragon generated another 10 points, seven kills and four aces. Miranda Mangual contributed nine points, six kills, one aces and one block whiel Katie Burke served up four points and an ace along with 14 kills and two blocks.

The Lady Sandstoners head to Massena on Thursday.

Canton 3, Massena 1: At Jerry Hourihan Gym in Canton, the visitng Lady Raiders dropped the opening game 25-15 but recovered to take the second 25-21 only to have the Lady Bears step up to claim the next two 25-21, 25-18.

Samanntha Villnave had 12 service points and four kills to lead the way for Massena (4-3) which entered the match having won its previous four outings. Cashlynn Jaggers tallied 11 points and five kills while Nina Rourke served up seven points and Jacalyn Lamica fashioned 24 assists.

For Canton (3-4), Megan Howard logged 12 points and one kills. Beth Pearson added 11 points, eight aces and four kills. Rachel Sanderson finished with nine points, six kills and one ace while Emma Warner delivered six assists.

Salmon 3, Edwards-Knox 1: In the other volleyball match of the day, the visiting Lady Shamrocks won the first two sets 25-15, 25-23 but dropped the third 25-16 before storming back to claim the fourth 25-11.

Raven Oakes led Salmon river with 18 points, seven aces and five kills. Iakohonwentsiawakon Mitchell contributed 15 points and four aces. Also aiding the winning effort were; Raylynn Sunday (9 points, 6 assists, 3 kills), Taylin David (6 points, 3 kills), Tsiiowisonte Laffin (5 points) and Brittany Brooks (5 assists).

The Shamrocks host Canton on Thursday.
