CANTON The owner of a sand and gravel company is back in critical condition Tuesday after an accident that left him trapped in a front-end loader.
Ronald J. Stiles, 61, Rensselaer Falls, owner of Process Sand & Gravel, was unloading stone and gravel into a piece of equipment Monday morning at a quarry in the town of DeKalb when a screening plant collapsed onto the front-end loader he was operating.
The piece of equipment crushed the roof of the cab in which Mr. Stiles was sitting, pinning him against the steering wheel. Workers on the scene moved the screening plant from the cab by operating two more front-end loaders, in an attempt to relieve some of the pressure on Mr. Stiles.
Gouverneur Volunteer Fire Department used a hydraulic rescue tool to free him from the loader. He was reported to have a serious head injury and was flown by LifeNet helicopter to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, where he went from critical condition at 3 p.m. Monday to fair condition by 10 p.m.
A hospital supervisor confirmed he had once again been classified as in critical condition at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday.
