Unemployment rates for August announced by the state Department of Labor on Tuesday improved compared with last year in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
Compared with August 2012, the jobless rate for this August dropped in Jefferson County from 8.8 to 8.3 percent, Lewis County from 8.6 to 8.2 percent and St. Lawrence County from 10.3 to 9.1 percent. Jobless numbers also improved from July in the north country, as Jefferson County decreased from 8.5 to 8.3 percent, Lewis County from 8.4 to 8.2 percent and St. Lawrence County from 9.4 to 9.1 percent. At 9.1 percent, St. Lawrence County recorded the third highest unemployment rate statewide.
Across the 52-county upstate New York region, the August unemployment rate dipped from 8.2 to 7.1 percent compared with August 2012. Statewide, the rate decreased from 8.5 to 7.5 percent over the period, while the national rate fell from 8.2 to 7.3 percent.
