Burglar’s waste leads to arrest in Fargo Inn break-in

A Louisiana man is in custody in connection with a break-in at the former Fargo Inn on Loop Road in the town of Wilna in 2011.

Stephen A. McMorris, 20, Jennings, La., was charged Thursday night by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department with third-degree burglary after investigators said they matched DNA left at the scene of the Dec. 29, 2011, burglary.

Mr. McMorris, who was living in the area at the time of the burglary, is accused of taking copper piping and several bottles of alcohol from the defunct restaurant. During the break-in, he also caused $14,000 in damage to the building by ripping out the copper pipes, resulting in the malfunction of the septic system and the basement getting flooded, said Detective Benjamin K. Timerman.

He said that Mr. McMorris left an unusual “calling card” during the theft.

The detective said Mr. McMorris defecated behind a bar and investigators used the evidence to link him to the crime. They matched his DNA with a hair on a napkin found at the bar, he said.

On Thursday night, Mr. McMorris was extradited from Livingston Parish after investigators went to Louisiana to return him to Jefferson County to answer the charge. The DNA was matched with Mr. McMorris after he was stopped for a traffic violation in Louisiana about two weeks ago, Detective Timerman said.

“We worked closely with police in Louisiana,” the detective said.

Mr. McMorris, who admitted in a statement to police that he broke into the bar, was held at the Metro-Jefferson Public safety Building on $25,000 bail. The investigation is continuing.
