Hundreds of high school students from throughout Jefferson and Lewis counties will take over Jefferson Community College on Monday.

They’ll be there to learn about college and post-graduate opportunities at the community college’s Jefferson Higher Education Day.

“We hold it so the kids can see the different opportunities that are out there for them,” said event chairman and Sackets Harbor Central guidance counselor Ryan F. Tastor. “We’re expecting 98 colleges, universities, military organizations and other organizations.”

Most of the two- and four-year colleges will be from within the state, but Mr. Tastor said several will be from neighboring states and Canada.

The event, which is also sponsored by the Jefferson-Lewis Association for Counseling and Development, will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the JCC gymnasium.

This will be the third year with both a day session and an evening session.

“Area high schools can bus students to the event now,” he said. “There are a lot of families that like to go together for the evening session. Both sessions have been really popular.”

Last year, 1,000 students and family members attended the event. According to a news release, more than 500 students are expected to come to the morning session this year.

Mr. Tastor said the event gives students a chance to learn about college programs and build a rapport with admissions representatives.

Students can ask questions about all aspects of higher education at a panel presentation during the day session. There will be a financial aid session from 6 to 6:45 p.m. in the Jules Center Amphitheater, room 6-002.
