MASSENA - Autumn is here and those spectacular colors are in abundance out at the Nature Center.

Berries are ripening, and bright red and orange leaves fill the trails as the blue of the St. Lawrence meets the azure sky.

Deer are everywhere, and the trailcam has caught a random coyote, raccoon and even a bobcat. October is the perfect month to go on a family hike along the nature trails, or join us for one of our community events at the Nature Center. “Mind, Body, Soul” Art Exhibit

A special “Mind, Body, Soul - Come Alive!” exhibit will be on display at the Massena Public Library from Oct. 3 - 17. A public presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.. Everyone is welcome to attend.

This art exhibition is the culmination of our 2013 “Mind, Body, Soul - Come Alive! grant program, funded by the Alcoa Foundation. The grant program concludes this month, and this art exhibit will showcase photographs, paintings and three-dimensional art work created from programs offered through the grant. Participants and facilitators will be on hand opening night to discuss the success of this grant program, and show their woodcarvings, hand-made baskets, nature photography and much more.

Star Walk & Campfire Cooking

On Friday, .create a delicious dessert over an outdoor fire pit from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. For a $1 donation, participants of all ages can make a tasty treat that they cook themselves at the Nature Center.

Then, at 7:30 p.m., learn all about the stars of the night sky.

Take a guided walk under the twinkling Massena sky-scape and join local star gazer Bruce McClure as he leads this star walk. It’s a great way to learn about the constellations, and share a fun experience with others. Also, don’t miss this chance to speak with Bruce, who is a columnist for EarthSky!

Bittersweet Wreaths

On Saturday, come out to the Nature Center from 10 a.m. - noon to make beautiful, decorative seasonal wreaths out of bittersweet vines and other natural materials. This workshop is limited in size. $10 material fee. Please bring gloves and pruners.

Outdoor Meditation

Come out to the Nature Center from 1 - 2 p.m. Oct. 12. and celebrate the beauty of the changing season. Join our outdoor meditation circle for a guided meditation and then a short guided walk through the trails reflecting inwardly and connecting deeply with nature. Meet at the trail head at 1 p.m. Yoga mats and chairs provided.

Fall Clean-up Day

Calling all volunteers. The “Friends” will host their Fall Clean-up Day from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Oct. 19.

Everyone is invited to come out and lend a hand cleaning up the trails and preparing for the coming winter months. If they get eight or more Alcoa employees or retirees to come out and volunteer for a total of 40 hours, the Nature Center will be eligible for a $3.,00 “Alcoa Action Grant!” So, come out and get next to nature for the day, and bring a friend. Refreshments, warm drinks and snacks will be provides for all volunteers. Please let us know you will be coming out (315) 705-5022.

Welcome Jr. Earth Keepers!

Kids 5 - 12. Want to go on a scavenger hunt? How about a guided nature hike, or tracking wild animals? Join the Jr. Earth Keepers, our brand new nature club using fun new technologies to help kids explore the natural world. Become a backyard scientist, learn how to live “green” and how to be a nature ambassador in your community.

The Jr. Earth Keepers Club will meet monthly at the Nature Center from 1 - 3 p.m. Oct. 19 following the Fall Clean-up. This is the kick off tothe new grant funded by the Alcoa Foundation. Learn to become a steward of the Nature Center, and be enriched by the outdoors. For more information, call (315) 705-5022.

Nature Photography

Join Charlene Dumas, self-taught photography enthusiast, as she leads you through the basics of nature photography on the beautiful trails at the Robert Moses Nature Center from 1 - 3 p.m. Oct. 19. This autumn session is part of a series of four classes. Participants are able to observe and document nature as it changes through the seasons. The trails are easy to hike. Bring your camera and dress for weather. This workshop is free of charge and appropriate for teens and adults. Pre-registration is required. Please call (315) 705-5022.

Pet Halloween Costume Contest

Halloween costumes are for everyone! Dress up your little minion and parade them down the runway at the Nature Center on Oct. 26 for a Pet Costume Contest. The event begins at 1 p.m. Dogs, Cats, rabbits, turtles and hedgehogs... All pets are welcome to join in the fun. This is a free event, and spectators are welcome to watch as each pet is introduced and brought down the runway.

These programs are sponsored by the Mind, Body, Soul - Come Alive! grant, which was funded by the Alcoa Foundation.They provide an opportunity for participants to join others in a healthy activity in nature.

The new grant, also funded by the Alcoa Foundation, is called “Earth Keepers.” They will be using technology to help others connect and learn about nature. This interactive programing will be available in schools and at the Nature Center this year, plus we are begining a long-term nature club for children 5 - 12 years-old. Call us to set up a visit either at your location or at the Nature Center.
