Five Lewis legislative races contested, candidate forums set

LOWVILLE — While primary elections have cleared up some of the Lewis County legislative races, five of the 10 seats still will be contested in the November general election.

And the Lewis County Farm Bureau has scheduled three “Meet the Candidates” events in late October to better inform residents about the candidates.

The first event will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Croghan Fire Hall on Fire Hall Street.

The lone contested race represented at the forum will be in District 6, where fourth-year Legislator Paul M. Stanford, D-Watson, faces retired town judge and bus driver Republican Andrea J. Moroughan. Mr. Stanford also holds the Independence Party line, while Mrs. Moroughan additionally holds the Conservative line.

Uncontested incumbents Philip C. Hathway, R-Harrisville, in District 1 and Chairman Michael A. Tabolt, R-Croghan, in District 2 also are slated to attend, as is Republican Bryan D. Moser, a log truck driver who is running unopposed to replace Legislator John O. Boyd, D-New Bremen, in District 4.

The second event will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Turin library on East Main Street, featuring two contested races.

In District 8, Lyons Falls hardware store owner and former county Legislator Lawrence L. Dolhof is running on GOP and Conservative lines against Independence Party member Duane C. DeLair, Constableville, a psychologist and appraiser who also holds the Democratic Party line.

And, in District 10, eighth-year Legislator Jerry H. King, R-West Leyden, is seeking re-election on the Republican and Conservative lines against West Leyden resident and former Boonville trustee John A. Healt, running solely on the Independence Party line. Republican Neil H. Pepper, running unopposed to replace Legislator Jack T. Bush, R-Brantingham, in District 9, also is scheduled to attend the Turin event.

The third session will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Lewis County Marine Corps League headquarters on Route 12 just west of Lowville, also featuring two contested races.

In District 7, a three-way race to replace Legislator William J. Burke, R-West Lowville, will be held. Candidates are Lee Hinkleman, commander of the Lowville American Legion, on Republican and Conservative lines; Jeffrey F. Beyer, who works at Climax Manufacturing Co., on Democratic and independent lines, and Gregory M. Kulzer, dairy product specialist and state rating officer with the state Department of Agriculture and Markets, on an independent line.

And, in District 5, Democrat Richard A. Chartrand, a retired director of public works at Fort Drum, and Republican Thomas E. Jaconski, emergency preparedness and environmental health and safety coordinator at Carthage Area Hospital, will face off. Mr. Chartrand also holds an independent line, while Mr. Jaconski also will appear on the Conservative and Independence lines.

Republican Craig P. Brennan, a retired police investigator and businessman from Deer River who is unopposed in District 3, also is slated to appear at the Lowville event. He was appointed Monday to the county Legislature to replace Legislator Charles R. Fanning, R-Copenhagen, who died in July.

With the majority of legislators deciding not to run for re-election this fall, Mr. Brennan will join at least five — and as many as seven — other newcomers on the 10-person board next year.
