Massena man jailed for beating girlfriend

CRIMINAL OBSTRUCTION BREATHING - MASSENA - A Massena man charged with putting his shin across his girlfriend’s throat because she wouldn’t allow him to review her phone to see if she had been talking to any other men has been jailed.

Village police charged Alan L. Russell Jr., 32, of 230 Barnhart Road, Massena, with criminal obstruction of breathing, unlawful imprisonment, second-degree harassment and fourth-degree criminal mischief at 9:25 p.m. Tuesday following an investigation into an incident into a domestic dispute that reportedly took place at 12:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Sarah Paquin, in the statement she signed for police, said she had gone to her boyfriend’s residence with plans to spend the night when an argument broke out.

She said Russell grabbed her phone and started to scroll through it to see if she had been talking with any other men. Ms. Paquin told police she knocked her phone out of his hand, and he responded by grabbing her by the hair and punching her twice in the face.

She said he then threw her on the bed and dragged her off the bed and onto the floor by her hair. She said he then knelt on her throat and held her arms to the floor. “I could not breathe,” she said, noting she begged her boyfriend to stop.

She said he also broke her phone so she could not contact police. Ms. Paquin said when Russell finally released her she grabbed her purse and went to a friend’s house.

Russell was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.
