Any Central Division win is a big win.
OFA Boys Soccer Coach Matt Morley said a lot in a few words after his Blue Devils remained unbeaten at 5-0-1 and tied with Canton, a 6-0 winner over Gouverneur Tuesday, for the division lead with a 2-1 win over Potsdam (2-4 Central).
The Devils (7-1-1), who are ranked 20th in this weeks NYS Class B Poll, will start the second round of the division season by hosting Massena (2-4-0 Central) at Kennedy School on Friday. Massena dropped a 1-0 decision to Salmon River on Tuesday.
In the the Central Division its always a tough game and teams get better in the second round. We have to be ready to play well against Massena, said Morley.
Against Potsdam, the Devils opened a 2-0 lead which could have been 3-0 had not for Stoner defender Buck Doheny who blocked a point blank shot by Peyton Lalone. Lalone picked up an assist on the first goal of the game which was scored by stopper Dave Prudhomme 13 minutes before the half.
Prudhomme broke out of the defensive end, took a lead pass from Lalone, dribbled past two defenders and goalie Jack Byrnes (6 saves) from sharpe angle and deposited the ball into the net. Twelve minutes into the second half, Conor Hannan tucked hard shot into the net from the 18 yardline.
Potsdam halved the lead with eight minutes to play when Dylan Emerson scored from close range off a direct kick by David Camano.
Potsdam really made a surge and I was very happy with the way the guys answered, We didnt score but we protected the lead, said Morley after Jacob Sias finished with a four-save goaltending win.
Potsdam JVs 2 - OFA 0: Potsdam scored a goal in each half gaining the win. Justyn McCormick stopped 12 shots in goal and Alex Sias was cited by Coach Jim Howard for fine play all over the field.
Coach Howard also cited the defensive play of Matt Ramm, Will Kroeger and Austin Lalonde and Ben Hammond and Josiah Fifield in the midfield.
Canton 6, Gouv 0: Jake Facey and Matt Mende each tallied two goals and Tanner Anderson recorded one goal and three assists leading the Bears (7-1-1, 5-0-1 NAC Central) past the Wildcats (0-9-1, 0-6).
