Morristown Central School interested in buying vacant Methodist church

MORRISTOWN — The Morristown Central School District is interested in purchasing the vacant United Methodist Church, 504 Gouverneur St., that borders the school. “We have an interest and we’re talking,” Superintendent David J. Glover said, stressing that no price has been discussed and no offers have been made yet.

The Rev. Thomas A. Clemow, retired, a property management consultant with the Upper New York Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, said the church is not yet publicly discussing the future of the property besides saying that it is going to be on the market.

“We shall see where this leads,” the Rev. Mr. Clemow said after noting that the church will do its “due diligence” as a seller.

The Morristown United Methodist Church was closed in August because of increasing financial obligations and declining membership.

Over the years the church and the school have had a close working relationship.

Mr. Glover said the school uses the church parking lot for faculty parking.

“We’ve had this mutual agreement where we get to use the parking spaces but we maintain the lot,” he said. “It’s a mutually beneficial relationship.”

The school also at times has used the church building for various functions including blood drives and kindergarten screening, Mr. Glover said.

With the building up for sale, Mr. Glover said, there is a possibility that the school’s access to the spaces could be restricted by a future owner.

“Losing parking is not something we’re looking forward to,” he said.

The building also could be used for plays, musical events and community functions if the school purchased it, Mr. Glover said.

But the conversation about a possible purchase has just begun, he said, and there is no timeline established for how soon a sale could go through.
