LISBON - R.L. W. Green, a lifelong resident of Lisbon, is challenging Town Justice Phillip Fonda in this years election.
Running as an independent, Mr. Green said, I think it would be good to see some new blood in there.
Mr. Fonda, who is running as a Republican, could not be reached for this story.
Mr. Green, a self-employed construction contractor, said he made the decision to run in the spring after talking with local residents who told him they would like to see a change in the town court.
In particular Mr. Green said he would like to see the town court operate more efficiently with a stronger deterrent factor to keep potential criminals on the straight and narrow.
The way I see it a lot of people, if the law isnt strict enough for them theyll re-offend or do something even worse because they wont see it as a deterrent to stop them, he said.
Mr. Green also said he hopes to increase the amount of hours the town justices work every month.
Currently court is held every Tuesday evening but Mr. Green said he would like to see that stepped up.
I would enjoy the responsibility really, Mr. Green said of the town justice position and he said he has been getting encouragement from many people who are ecstatic at the thought of a new person behind the bench.
In order to get out the vote and publicize his campaign Mr. Green said he has been traveling around the town having face-to-face conversations with community members.
Ive been stopping door to door with [voter] registration forms, Mr. Green said. So far Ive passed out 16 forms for people who werent registered to vote.
Hes confident that he will do well in the Nov. 5 election.
As long as we can get them out there to vote thats all it takes, really, Mr. Green said.
