All resources must be used against heroin

I am writing in regards to the Sept. 22 article titled “Aftermath of an overdose: Heroin on the rise in Jefferson County.”

I am a lifetime resident of Northern New York and a member of the Rapid Response Workgroup, which addresses prescription drug abuse and prevention of overdose deaths in Jefferson County. I am glad to see that the scale of this issue is being brought to the general public through your article.

This is war. The enemy is cunning, baffling and powerful.

His weapons present themselves disguised as “freedom of pain” or a “great buzz,” etc. The recruiters (dealers/doctors) march the volunteers (our loved ones) willingly onto an unintended battlefield before the recruit understands the life and death consequences of their choice. The addiction sets in and the battle begins. Before long the family, friends, community and innocent bystanders are drawn into this war.

Community policing and law enforcement are just two of our many weapons to be used in this battle against drugs, but there are many more. Narcan, the opiate overdose-reversing drug, is another very important tool.

If available for use by law enforcement on this battlefield, it could very well save a precious life. A life that could recover and potentially find himself able to fight effectively, for himself, to break the bonds of addiction, as many have.

Now is certainly not the time to limit our use of any resource, including Narcan, in fighting this difficult war. One life saved is worth it, especially if it is your loved one.
