CARTHAGE — The community is gearing up for the annual CROP Walk, set for Oct. 20.

The Christian Rural Overseas Program hunger walks, sponsored by Church World Services, aid people in need worldwide.

A poster contest, open to students in Jefferson County, will be held for the first time this year. An announcement says the contest is “to raise awareness about hunger and poverty by encouraging local students to think through these issues while creating poster contest entries. Posters must relate to the CROP Hunger Walk and must contain the words “Carthage Area CROP Hunger Walk” or “Ending Hunger One Step at a Time: CROP Hunger Walk.” Entries may be dropped off at Carthage Free Library, 412 Budd St.; the Village Ecumenical Ministries Food Pantry, 452 S. Washington St.; or Sally Ploof Hunter Memorial Library, 101 Public Works Drive, Black River.

The judging will be Oct. 16. The winner will receive a gift certificate from Stefano’s Restaurant and will have his or her poster displayed as the Carthage CROP Walk 2013 Poster. The second-place poster will win a McDonald’s gift certificate, and a Dunkin’ Donuts gift certificate will be given for third place. For more information, log onto www.crophungerwalk.org.

Amber Hunt is the coordinator for the Carthage walk. She said she represented her church, the Second United Methodist Church of Champion, as a walker for of years before being asked to coordinate the walk with Kimily A. Cummings.

“I think it is important because I think sometimes we take for granted that we are going to have food on our plates, a roof over our head, and fresh water to drink,” Ms. Hunt said. “There are people in our own community that worry about not what they are going to have for dinner, but if they have dinner.”

The Carthage walk begins with registration at 1 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene, 960 State St. The walk starts at 2 p.m. from the church going west, continues across the bridge and down Bridge Street to McDonald’s, then loops back to the church.

Funds raised through pledges support the ministry of Church World Service to aid in hunger-fighting efforts worldwide; 25 percent remains in the area. In addition to money, canned food or nonperishable items will be collected along the walk route to be donated to the Carthage food pantry. Walkers who cannot collect pledges are asked to bring food donations. Churches along the route also have been asked to leave out nonperishable and canned foods that walkers will collect using grocery carts borrowed from Price Chopper.
