SLU’s Nwaigwe named LL’s top defensive player


St. Lawrence University senior linebacker Obi Nwaigwe was named Liberty League defensive performer of the week after leading the Saints to a 14-10 win over Rochester on Saturday.

Nwaigwe totaled five tackles and three sacks in the win over the Yellowjackets. Freshman Chyron Brown-Wallace was selected rookie of the week after posting 1 1/2 sacks along with a forced fumble and a recovery.

Clarkson University sophomore Victoria Kirkemo was awarded volleyball performer of the week after recording 58 kills and 34 digs as the Golden Knights went a perfect 5-0 last week. SLU’s Rebecca Briggs was rookie of the week after leading the Saints to a 3-1 record.

St. Lawrence junior Jack Whelan earned men’s golfer of the week, finishing tied for first place with a 2-under 69 in the rain-shortened Hamilton College Invitational. SLU senior goaltender Nicole Matos was awarded field hockey defensive performer of the week. She stopped all 15 shots she faced in a 2-0 shutout of Rensselaer — her second shutout in the past three starts.

League honor roll honorees include St. Lawrence’s Christian Yarros in men’s soccer and Rebecca Doser in volleyball.
