Little Theatre pays a visit to “Those Crazy Ladies in the House on the Corner”

The latest show from Little Theatre of Watertown has lots of talking points.

“It’s about three geriatric old ladies who live in a house on the corner whose pastime is to talk — all at the same time,” said director Daniel J. Allington. “But the writer is very creative in how he created their dialogue.”

“Those Crazy Ladies in the House on the Corner,” by Pat Cook, opens Thursday with a general-admission show. There will be another general-admission show Oct. 20 and dinner-theater shows on Friday, Saturday, Oct. 17 and 18. Matinee dinner-theater shows are on Sunday and Oct. 19.

Someone gave a copy of “Those Crazy Ladies” to Little Theatre veteran Jane Bowman Jenkins, who enjoyed its mix of humor and good nature. Despite tackling the serious issue of senior citizens trying to remain in their homes as long as possible, she said the play has a happy ending.

“I always look for something with humor as well as some meat and potatoes — not all frivolities,” Mrs. Jenkins said. “It’s also what our audience likes.”

Mr. Allington, who last directed “Love, Loss, and What I Wore” in the summer of 2012 for Little Theatre, directed “Those Crazy Ladies” about 20 years ago when he lived in Texas. He said much of its humor is from “biting remarks.”

But things change for the elderly women, who are sisters, when a doctor persuades them to let a nurse who needs a place to live move in with them.

“Nurse Jean has them planning parties, pulling Halloween pranks and wearing jogging suits while they race one another to the corner,” according to a description of the play from its licensing agency, Dramatic Publishing Inc.

Things get more lively when a nephew of the sisters shows up with a plan to sell the family house.

Mrs. Jenkins plays Dora, one of the sisters.

“She’s got some of the funniest lines in the show,” said Mr. Allington. “But a lot of the humor comes through Pat Cook, the writer, who took normal, everyday stuff and made it funny. It works because of the way he delivers it and puts it together.”

Mrs. Jenkins said that playing Dora is a good fit for her.

“She’s kind of the mouthy one and she’s pretty vivacious for an old lady. Me too,” she said, laughing. “Is that typecasting or what?”
