MALONE - The Massena Central junior varsity football team saw its bid for a second straight undefeated NAC season end in an 18-16 loss on the road to Franklin Academy on Thursday.

The junior Raiders went 8-0 last fall and had won their first five games of this season before falling short to FA.

Patrick Manning racked up 247 all-purpose yards for Massena, rushing for 208 yards on 18 carries to go along with a 36-yard kick-off return and two-point conversion catch. Jason Zembeck also made lead contributions, carrying the ball 12 times for 105 yards including touchdown runs of 10 and four yards. He also caught a two-point conversion to account for the other Massena points. Ethan Marcello ran the ball seven times for 37 yards while Abe Derouchia, back in the lineup after a three-week absence, contributed an eight-yard run.

Quarterback Maddox Merry completed four of six passes for 20 yards. Bobby Todd had a catch along the Zembeck, Marcello and Manning.

Defensively for the junior Raiders, Derouchia notched nine tackles followed by Manning with eight and Todd with seven, including a sack. Alonie McGee had another three takedowns and a sack.

Massena fell behind 12-0 in the first quarter and trailed 18-8 at the half. After scoring the only points of the third quarter, the junior Raiders marched the ball 65 yards on their last drive only to stall on the five-yard line.

Now 5-1, the Massena JV’s are slated to play at OFA next Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m.
