Colleges: SLU to honor 6 athletes, 1999 men’s soccer team

CANTON — St. Lawrence University will induct six former athletes and the 1999 men’s soccer NCAA Division III championship team into the Athletic Hall of Fame this Saturday on campus.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for noon at the Eben Holden Dining Hall.

Other inductees are former Saints Hobey Baker Award candidate and standout men’s hockey defenseman Daniel Laperriere (1992), football and wrestling All-America Dave Hudson (1980), cross country All-American and Olympian Lawton Redman (1998), lacrosse All-America Sam Hovey (1987), field hockey and lacrosse All-America Stacy Turner (2002), and national champion rider Audrey Sparre (1978).

The 1999 men’s soccer team went 22-0-0 en route to the championship victory, a 2-0 win over Wheaton. The team, over the 1998 and 1999 seasons, went 60 games without a loss and won 40 straight regular-season games. SLU’s Dan Annan Jr. was named Division III player of the year.

Laperriere was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award and named Eastern College Athletic Conference player of the year in 1992. The Saints defenseman captained the team that year and finished his SLU career with 128 points, including 106 assists. He still holds SLU marks for points and assists in a career and a season for a defenseman. He played professionally for 16 years and is a scout for the Colorado Avalanche.

Hudson started for four seasons on the Saints’ offensive line. As a senior co-captain in 1978, he won first-team All America honors at tackle. He was part of SLU’s 1978 NCAA semifinalist team in 1976 and NCAA team in 1978. In wrestling, he competed on two NCAA top 10 teams and was captain as a junior and senior. Hudson later coached wrestling at SLU and is now wrestling coach at Phillips Exeter Academy.

Redman competed in cross country, Nordic skiing and track for the Saints and competed for the United States in biathlon in the 2002 Winter Olympics. He won the conference title in cross country three times, captaining the team in 1996 and 1997. He qualified for the NCAAs in Nordic skiing and later won three straight U.S. biathlon national titles. Redman is now a medical evacuation pilot for the Vermont Army National Guard and has been deployed to Iraq twice.

Hovey remains the all-time leading scorer in Saints men’s lacrosse history with 160 goals and 273 points. The two-time All America helped his teams to two NCAA tournaments in his four years as a starter. The Saints went 46-23 during his time with the team. Hovey is now a financial advisor.

Turner is the Saints’ all-time leading scorer in field hockey and women’s lacrosse. The Saints’ Outstanding Senior Athlete in 2002, Turner led SLU to its first ECAC Championship and to the NCAA regionals in field hockey. She set records for goals in a season with 31 and assists with 17 in 2000. She also set the women’s lacrosse record for goals in a season with 85 and points with 122. Turner is an actuary/strategy analyst.

Sparre is the only Saints national champion in open horsemanship over fences. She qualified for nationals in two events as a junior. She is now vice president and chief of operations for Homes With Hope in Connecticut.

Saturday’s inductions bring the Saints Athletic Hall of Fame total to 215 individual athletes, 10 coaches and 19 teams.
