Sen. Ritchie: Drop fee for veteran status on New York state driver’s licenses

State Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, announced Friday that she will introduce legislation to waive the fees for the state’s new “veteran” driver’s licenses.

Under a new state law, men and women who have served in the armed forces are eligible for a special driver’s license that indicates their veteran status. There is no fee for veterans who want to receive the special designation when their license is up for renewal. However, those who want to obtain the new special license before their old license expires will be charged $12.50, the state Department of Motor Vehicles announced.

It’s an arrangement Sen. Ritchie called “disappointing.”

“It’s great that this was created as a way for our veterans to proudly show that they have served our country but I strongly feel that a fee for this special designation is unnecessary,” Sen. Ritchie said in a news release.

According to the release, the bill, if adopted, would waive the fee for roughly one million men and women throughout the state who have served in the military.
