Ogdensburg Fire Department begins home smoke detector checks

OGDENSBURG — City firefighters will be going door to door to check home smoke detectors and, if necessary, equip them with new batteries.

Chief Michael J. Farrell said the visits will begin between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the deadline for completion set for Nov. 3.

The firefighters will have 400 batteries to give away.

According to Mr. Farrell, 96 percent of all homes have at least one smoke detector. Yet an estimated 2,000 people die each year because the devices don’t work or aren’t installed properly.

Working smoke detectors, Mr. Farrell said, are more essential in the winter months when home heating systems and wood-burning stoves are in use. He said smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years and tested monthly.

For more information, call the Fire Department at 393-2321. If the firefighters miss a homeowner, a card with information to call the station and schedule an appointment will be left.
