Discussion Group buzzing over event for New-Bees

CANTON - Anyone interested in becoming a beekeeper will benefit from a workshop for beginners to take place from 7- 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Social Room (side entrance) at the UU Church at 3-1/2 Main St., Canton.

This special one-time workshop is designed for anyone interested in this fascinating hobby or small business, especially if they wish to get started next Spring. Beginners may not be aware that they need to order their “nucleus” of bees for a starter hive in the Fall, right now, for instance.

Many tricks of the trade will be shared and questions will be answered by Discussion Group members, who are all north country beekeepers, to assist “new-bee’s” as much as possible. Follow-up workshops of hands-on basics in the spring and summer of 2014 are also planned.

The workshop will present several brief presentations by different local beekeepers, who meet regularly to share resources. The presentations include: Bees & Beekeeping Resources, Equipment and Gear, a Timeline of a year in a North Country Bee Yard, the Bare Bones Essentials of Keeping Bees, Biology, Pests, Diseases, and Terminology for the lay person. The event will be held It is a group of regular attendees of the Local Living Venture’s “Bees & Beekeeping Discussion Group” that have come together to create this community-based workshop for people interested in keeping bees, starting at “square one.”

The Discussion Group is held on the last Wednesday of every month in Canton and is a casual setting for sharing information and asking questions about bees. All interested parties are invited to attend free of charge.

The suggested free will donation for the Beginner Beekeeping Basics Workshop is $15, $5 with student ID, children free.

Future workshops will include Hands-On in the Bee Yard in the spring of 2014, plus Pests & Predators and a session of Honey Extraction in the Summer. Anyone interested, but who cannot attend this event, is encouraged to get on the mailing list for future notices.

For more information, contact the Local Living Venture at (315) 347-4223 or (email is preferable.)
