James A. Garfield III


Mr. James A. Garfield III, age 72 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at his residence in the town of Potsdam while under the care of his family and the Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19th at 1pm at the Garner Funeral Home with Msgr. Robert Aucoin celebrant. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Home on Saturday from 10am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory can be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.

Jimmy is survived by his wife Elaine Garfield; sons Richard (Lauren) Garfield and Robert Garfield; daughter Victoria (Fred) Wright Jr. and his grandson Terry Green Jr.

Mr. James A. Garfield III was born on August 5, 1941 in Potsdam, NY to the late James A. Garfield Jr. and Adeline Jenner. He was a 1960 graduate of Potsdam Central School. He served in the United States Air Force. He then was married to Elaine Sero in Marysville, Ontario. Jim worked as a barber in Watertown for a few years. He then moved to Potsdam where he had his own barber shop for a few years. He then went to work for the Department of Environmental Conservation. He worked out of the Wilson Hill area. After a while he went to work for the Town of Potsdam for five years and then signed on with the Village of Potsdam where he remained for 29 years until his retirement in 2001. He didn’t stay retired long though, he soon went back to work for the Town of Potsdam for a few more years.

Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish. Fishing was his greatest love though. His nickname amongst his friends was “reel him in Jim.” He also loved to woodwork and used that skill to help his hunting and fishing. He made a lot of his own fishing lures and duck decoys by hand. He also enjoyed photography.

Jim was a former member of the Hannawa Falls Volunteer Fire Department and the Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a former member of the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce Jaycees. Online condolences can be sent
