Arthur ‘Artie’ L. Cassell, Sr., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, Florida. Mr. Cassell became ill in April of this year and never recovered from his illness.

He was born in Tupper Lake, New York on Saturday, October 30, 1937 to the late William D. Cassell and Margaret Pickering Cassell.

Mr. Cassell graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1956 and moved to Newton Falls, New York to go to work in the Newton Falls Paper Mill and started out being a swipper on the paper machines and worked up to Production Manager of the Paper Machines. He retired in 1995 due to a severe heart attack. He did go back to consult, when the paper mill reopened later.

He belonged to the Newton Falls Fire Department and was one of the crew who shot off fire works each 4th of July for many years. He moved to Cranberry Lake and joined the Cranberry Lake Fire and Rescue and became an EMT. He also, was the one with a Gumbie suit in the icy waters of Cranberry Lake, where they practiced saving people and he was the one who was always saved. He also, was an assistant leader for the Troop #29 Boy Scouts and he with the Scout Leader, Ned Hodge would take the boys on 50 mile hikes into the woods to learn survival.

In his free time, he loved to ice fish, fish, hunt, ski, boating and anything else that was outdoors. He loved to watch the deer and wild animals on our land and would feed them. Most of all, he enjoyed just being with his family and friends. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and a friend for life.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beverly Shatraw; daughter, Laurie LaFrance of Glen Falls, New York; son, Christopher Cassell and wife Maxine of Dunnellon, Florida; brothers, Nelson of Dunnellon, Florida and Robert and wife Marsha of St. Petersburg, Florida; sister, Katherine Towne of St. Petersburg, Florida; sister-in-law, Isabel Cassell of Tupper Lake, New York; grandchildren, Jessica Fraser and husband Colin of Queensbury, New York, Mathew LaFrance and wife Jessica, Danielle LaFrance, Miranda Holiday and husband Randy, all from Cranberry Lake, New York, Tama Moore of Watertown, New York, Devin Moore of Star Lake, New York and Constance Cassell of Dunnellon, Florida; great grandchildren, Nick, Kaeliann, Little Artie, Holden, Jayden, Elssie, Ayva, Liam and Grayson.

Mr. Cassell was preceded in death by his son, Arthur ‘Skip’ Cassell in 1983; his son-in-law, William LaFrance; brother, William D. Cassell; sister, Constance Trombley and brother-in-law, Larry Towne.

Celebration of his life will be held at St. Hubert’s Church in Star Lake, New York and a luncheon at Cranberry Lake Fire Hall within a few weeks.
