Oswegatchie OKs tentative $ 2.27 million budget for 2014

HEUVELTON - The town of Oswegatchie’s tentative $2,277,810 budget for 2014 was unveiled Monday to the town board.

The proposed spending plan is $95,509 greater than this year’s $2,182,201 budget and has a tax rate of $2.62 per $1,000 of assessed valuation, up from this year’s $2.59.

The tentative new budget carries with it a tax levy of $595,793, up from this year’s $581,237.

The town’s taxable value increased for another year, this time to $226,618,695 from $223,767,278.

The town also for another year was able to stay under the state-imposed, 2-percent cap on property tax increases, said William E. Dashnaw, the town’s budget officer.

“It’s going to take a slight change,” he said. “I don’t see towns having a lot of fat in their budgets.”

The town’s annual contracts to provide fire protection to Heuvelton will cost $108,261 and to Morristown it will cost $18,250. This year, the respective expenses were $106,138 and $17,500.

Also, the town’s annual allocation from the state’s Consolidated Highway Improvement Program increased from $135,180 to $173,333.

Voting in favor of the tentative budget were Supervisor Alfred “Bud” Nichols and councilors Bruce O. LaRose, Kenneth Wilson, Lillian O. LaRose, and Michael Stoner.

The final 2014 town budget will be put before a public hearing and a vote to approve at the board’s Nov. 11 meeting.

In other business, the board accepted the resignation of Town Assessor Beverly J. Davis after 17 years of service. Her successor at annual salary of $26,000 is Mark L. Schnorr.
