Honored: The Cape Vincent Chamber of Commerce named Jeanne Thompson the September senior of the month.

Ms. Thompson has been a writer for the weekly Thousand Island Sun newspaper for 20 years. She was an aide at Thousand Islands Central School’s high school for 12 years, and village clerk/treasurer for 21 years, retiring in 1990. She was involved in the Cub Scouts and PTA, helped produce several school variety shows to benefit local charities, was on the Cape Vincent Correctional Facility’s community advocacy board for 15 years, the board of the Historical Society and Museum for nearly 25 years and the Cemetery Association.

Mrs. Thompson has helped at the French Festival and served on the housing board as well as the boards of the Paynter Center, Clayton, and Tibbets Point Lighthouse.

Honored: Dana M. Barry, senior technical writer and editor at Clarkson University’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing, served as a visiting professor and speaker in Japan in September. Ms. Barry spoke on successful entrepreneurship and promoting creative engineering education. She conducted a workshop at Mikunigaoka High School in creative chemistry for students and gave a presentation about a core model curriculum for engineering education to administrators and professors at Suzuka National College of Technology, where she holds the official title of visiting professor.

She also presented a paper, titled “U.S. Students Carry Out a Nuclear Safety Project in a Virtual Environment,” at KED 2013: the 17th International Conference on Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems, held in Kitakyushu, Japan.

Ms. Barry previously served as a visiting professor overseas in Malaysia, England, Japan and China. She gave keynote addresses in Suzuka City, Japan, in 2008, and in Xiamen, China, in 2011.
