A Hammond man was sentenced Tuesday in Jefferson County Court to jail time and probation supervision for causing an accident in October 2012 that killed a Redwood woman and injured her companion.
Mark C. Hujar, 47, of 3167 County Route 6, was sentenced to six months in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and five years probation after Aug. 6 guilty pleas to criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault.
He admitted that on Oct. 18, 2012, on Route 37 in the town of Theresa he tried to pass several vehicles, including a tractor-trailer, in a no-passing zone, resulting in a head-on collision that killed Robin T. Broughan, 53, and injured the driver of the struck vehicle, Michael W. Homan, also of Redwood. Mr. Homan suffered multiple broken bones, an abdominal injury and a cut on his scalp in the crash.
I would like to say to the family of Robin and Michael that I am now, and will truly remain forever, sorry, Mr. Hujar said before sentence was pronounced by Judge Kim H. Martusewicz.
He also was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution. His probation supervision will be transferred to St. Lawrence County.
