Potsdam boys soccer team spoils Massena comeback

POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central varsity boys soccer team spoiled an impressive Massena Central comeback in one of the two NAC Central Division matchups staged on Wednesday.

Canton outlasted Franklin Academy 2-1 in the other.

Potsdam 4, Massena 3 (OT): At the Potsdam turf field, the host Sandstoners built a 2-0 lead by halftime and went ahead by three goals early in the second before the Raiders came storming back to force overtime.

Ian Vitek opened the scoring 16 minutes into the game off an assist from Matt Stone. Pat Normandin netted the second Potsdam goal in the 27th minute assisted by Dylan Gruneisen before Ebuka Ononye pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth minute of the second half by finishing off a play set up by Vitek.

Jordan Robert sparked the Massena comeback when he converted from Dylan Stone just two minutes after the third Potsdam goal then cut the deficit to 3-2 five minutes later with an unassisted marker. Junior Zach Kozsan capped the Raider rally by knocking the ball into the back of the net through a goalmouth scramble with five minutes left in regulation.

Ononye kept Massena from coming way with a point when he connected from Dylan Emerson three minutes into the first 10-minute overtime and the Sandstoners made it stand for the dramatic win.

Ashler Herrick made seven saves working the Potsdam crease through the first half and the 20 minutes of overtime while Jack Byrnes handled another seven shots in the second half. Cameron Marsh and Brendan Broderick combined to record 15 stops backstopping the Raider effort.

The Sandstoners (8-5, 5-4) are slated to play at Franklin Academy on Friday while Massena (4-10, 3-7) returns to action on Tuesday at home to FA.

Canton 2, FA 1: In Malone, Tanner Sanderson converted off an assist from Jacob Oatman with 4:50 left in regulation to lift the Bears (9-2-1, 7-1-1) to the win.

Jake Facey opened the scoring for Canton assisted by Matt Mende in the sixth minute and the lead held until the 33rd minute of the second half when Isai Paredones pulled the Huskies even with an unassisted goal.

Scott Wight made five saves for the win while Austin Lamay handled seven shots for FA (8-4-1, 6-3-1).
