MALONE - The Potsdam Central varsity boys soccer team overcame an early deficit then held off a late charge in claiming a 3-2 NAC Central Division decision on the road over Franklin Academy on Friday.
The host Huskies opened the scoring when Isai Paredones finished off a play set up by Kody Mulverhill 14 minutes into the game but the Sandstoners rallied behind back-to-back goals by Ebuka Ononye in the 27th and 34th minutes off assists from Jake Mitchell and Ian Vitek.
Vitek put the Sandstoners ahead 3-1 when he converted off an assist from Dan Stone 14 minutes into the second half but the Huskies pulled back to within one with 13 minutes left in regulation when Daniel Badgley connected for the only unassisted goal of the game.
Ashler Herrick handled eight shots backstopping the Potsdam (9-5, 6-4) effort while Austin Lamay made four saves for FA (8-5-1, 6-4-1).
In the other two Central games on Friday, Canton blanked Salmon River 4-0 and OFA downed Gouverneur 5-0.
Canton 4, Salmon River 0: At Roger Dusharm field in Canton, the Bears (10-2-1, 8-1-1 17 points) moved within a point of OFA (8-0-2 18 points) taking a 3-0 halftime lead against the Shamrocks (4-9, 3-7). Josh Huaitt scored from Francesco Palumbo, Palumbo connected from Kegan Sovay and Matt Mende coverted from Jake Oatman in the first half for Canton. Cody Moore scored unassisted in the second half for the Bears, who received six saves from Scott Wight and great defensive play from Evan LaPoint, Kegan Sovay, Ryan Caldwell, and Shawn Rodee and excellent midfield work from Mende and Tanner Sanderson.
The Bears have allowed just four goals in 13 games. Zach Smith made 15 saves for Salmon River.
OFA 5, Gouverneur 0: In Gouverneur, the visiting Blue Devils scored all of their goals ini the first half led by Matt Piercey who generated a goal and three assists. Dillon Binion struck for a pair of goals. Conor Hannan and Peyton Lalone both finished with a goal and assist. Nate Peo fashioned a pair of helpers while Seth Pinkerton logged a solo assist.
Jacob Sias fielded four shots working the OFA (10-1-2, 8-0-2) crease for the shutout while Seth Carr recorded 14 stops for the Wildcats (0-13-1, 0-10).
In the NAC West Division boys soccer matchups on Friday; Lisbon outscored Edwards-Knox 3-1, Morristown blanked Clifton-Fine 4-0 and Hammond outscored Heuvelton 4-3..
A pair of varsity girls soccer game on Friday saw Tupper Lake down East Division rival St. Regis Falls 2-0 and Hermon-DeKalb gain a 5-1 decision over West Division rival Edwards-Knox.
