No injuries were reported at a structure fire Friday in the Town of Oswegatchie.
Through thick clouds of smoke made worse by wind, emergency crews from Heuvelton, Ogdensburg, Lisbon and Morristown battled flames that engulfed a house at 1206 Moreland Road shortly after 1 p.m.
Fire officials said the fire started in the kitchen, but the exact cause is still undetermined. An investigation is still ongoing, Heuvelton Fire Chief Mark Basford said.
The home is listed as belonging to Gary J. Brabant and was occupied by a family of five.
Stacy Snyder, a resident of the home, said she was shopping at Kinney Drugs, Ogdensburg, during the fire, but her daughter, Taylor Teriele, 20, was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom when she was awakened by heavy smoke and flames.
Ms. Teriele helped rescue several family pets before escaping the flames.
Demolition teams leveled the debris once the fire was put out, shortly before 4 p.m.
The Red Cross was notified of the familys loss, according to officials.
