BRASHER FALLS – The Malone Huskies built a 12-0 first-half lead, then held off a second-half surge by St. Lawrence Central to pick up their fourth consecutive Northern Athletic Conference victory 20-12 on Saturday in a game played in Brasher Falls. Malone took the lead with an 80-yard drive to open the game, on just six plays, with junior Ryan Hooper covering the final 16.

The Huskies (4-3) waited until the last possible second of the first half to collect their second TD of the day as sophomore QB Camron Gallagher bought some time with his legs, then found Abe Gravell in the back of the end zone for Malone’s second touchdown.

St. Lawrence (1-5) chewed up most of the third-quarter clock with its opening possession of the second half, going on a 19-play, 80-yard drive climaxed by David Plante scoring from the one.

Malone ran four plays on its ensuing possession to end the third quarter and ran another four plays to open up the final stanza protecting a 12-6 lead. Zach Raymond scored the eventual game-winning TD from 11 yards out and a Jake Henning to Raymond pass gave the Huskies another two points to increase their lead to 20-6 with plenty of time left (10:03) for the Larries to score at least once more.

SLC began its final scoring drive at the 43 and used 11 plays and most of the time left in the quarter to inch closer. Plante covered the final five yards of the drive for the TD with 4:28 left. The two-point conversion attempt was picked off in the end zone by Malone’s Jordan Yando, leaving the Larries eight points short.

Yando covered up the ensuing onside kick attempt and Malone ran off the final 4:25 of the game with Gallagher taking a knee eight plays later.

Raymond, a sophomore, paced the ground attack rushing 15 times for 183 yards, 111 of which came in the first half. Hooper added another 59 yards on the ground while running back Jake Perry kept the Larries defense honest with 28 tough-nosed yards up the middle on 10 attempts. But the workhorse of the game had to be Plante. The SLC senior carried the ball 27 times for 126 yards and both Larrie touchdowns. Plante also had one reception for five yards, while Mark Crump added another 69 yards on 13 rushing attempts.

The Huskies almost scored earlier in the second quarter as Gravell hauled in a Gallagher pass and broke away for the SLC defense. Gravell ran free until he reached the one-yard line, then as he was about to cross the goal line, the ball was dislodged and rolled out of the end zone for a touchback, giving the Larries the ball at their own 20. The SLC drive was haulted as Malone’s Dylan Garrand picked off a Mike Burns pass attempt, setting up Gravell’s catch in the end zone as the first-half’s buzzer sounded.

Tupper Lake 48, Canton 30: The Bears received a 42 yard touchdown run and a 10 yard touchdown run from Peyton VanBibber and Hunter Yerdon scored twice from inside the five in a loss at Tupper Lake.

VanBibber produced a two point conversion run and connected for two PAT kicks.

Cole Zeller caught a two point pass from Yerdon.

At press time, there are no details on Tupper Lake’s scoring opportunities against the Bears in the NAC regular season finale.
