MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity girls soccer team slowed Potsdam Centrals drive toward the 2013 NAC Central Division regular season title on Monday with a 2-0 win at Mike Nicholas Field.
The visiting Lady Sandstoners entered the game with a chance to clinch sole possession of the league banner but their loss, coupled with a 1-0 win by Franklin Academy over Canton, means this years race for the Central crown will come down to the final day for all three squads. Canton, which slipped to 9-4 wraps up the regular season on Wednesday at home against Gouverneur while on Thursday, Potsdam, which still holds the lead atop the division standings at 9-2-2, finishes up at home against OFA, and FA, which took over sole possession of second place at 9-3-1, is slated to play its finale at Norwood-Norfolk.
Massena 2, Potsdam 0: The Lady Raiders (8-5) continued their season-long improvement from an 0-4 start after producing unanswered goals in each half on their home turf.
Bailey Dillabough opened the scoring when she converted off an assist from Iastha Porter with 11:37 left in the first half for only second goal allowed by the Potsdam defense all season. Porter struck for the insurance goal assisted by Abby Laclair 19 minutes into the second half.
Bailey Young made four saves backstopping the shutout while Bre Sapp handled six of the shots she faced for the Lady Sandstoners.
The Lady Raiders also close out the regular season on Thursday on the road against Salmon River.
Massena will then gear up to take on FA on Tuesday, October 29, in the Section 10 Class A championship game at the Potsdam Central turf starting at 5 p.m. Potsdam will enter the Class B playoffs next week as the top seed.
The Massena-FA winner will advance to the NYSPHAA playoffs starting Saturday, Nov. 9, against the winner of Section 2 vs. 3. The site and time have yet to be determined.
FA 1, Canton 0: In Malone, senior Alyssa Tatro received a pass from Abigail Collins in the 79th minute to send the Golden Bears packing and give the Huskies hope for the divisional title. Jayme Lavoie made 11 saves to record the win in goal while Katie Clemmer stop 10 shots in the setback.
Gouverneur 3, Salmon River 1: The other Central Division game on Monday was staged in Gouverneur where the host Lady Wildcats overcame an early Salmon River lead for the win.
Tsiotenhariio Herne got the Lady Shamrocks off to a promising start when she finished off a play set up by Miranda David just 6:54 after the opening kick-off but Gouverneur made a quick recovery with two goals over the next 11 minutes. Emily Bush tied the game in the 13th minute assisted by Noelle Carbone. Jackie Ward notched the eventual game-winner five minutes later assisted by Bell Hall.
Bush closed out the scoring off an assist from Carbone midway through the second half.
