Fire damaged Watertown storage facility, vehicles inside (VIDEO)

At least two vehicles inside a storage facility sustained severe damage Monday evening, as did the building itself, during a fire at 560 W. Main St.

Watertown City Fire Chief Dale C. Herman said firefighters responded to the fire call about 6:40 p.m. Monday, and contained the blaze within 40 minutes.

“We used a considerable amount of water,” he said. “The building would probably have to be evaluated by a structural engineer.”

National Grid also cut power to the building Monday evening, he said.

Firefighters could be seen cutting into the sides of the building as heavy smoke spilled out.

Mr. Herman said the structure’s bowstring-style construction, which makes for an arched roof, made the call even more dangerous.

“With that type of construction there could be materials stored above, and wide gaps,” he said. “Any fire with that type of construction we take very seriously.”

Because of that, city firefighters requested mutual aid from the Fort Drum Fire Department and off-duty personnel, Mr. Herman said.

Fire investigators remained on scene throughout the night, and as of 10:50 p.m. Monday, a cause had not been determined.

Fire officials identified the owner of the building as Darin T. Duarte, although according to city records, the property is owned by his mother-in-law, Janet M. Abrams. Neither could be reached for comment late Monday.

In the 1990s, under previous owners, the building housed International Truck Repair.

Times staff writer Gordon Block contributed to this report.
