New Bremen thrift store holding four-day sale in Lowville

LOWVILLE — A New Bremen thrift store is holding a special sale in the village this week to sell off excess items and bring its products into the Lewis County seat.

“A lot of people can’t get to the thrift store, so we’re bringing the thrift store to them,” said Beverly G. Howlett, family services manager at Lewis County Opportunities Inc., New Bremen.

The nonprofit community action agency is sponsoring “Opportunity Knocks Comes to You” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Saturday in the former Papa Joe’s building at South State and River streets. Shoppers will be allowed to fill small bags for $2 and large garbage bags for $5.

“There are tons and tons of clothing of all sizes,” Mrs. Howlett said. Toys, household wares and other items also will be available to purchase at the bag sale.

The nonprofit agency since late 2011 has operated the Opportunity Knocks thrift store at the old Crystal View building at Route 812 and Artz Road, with proceeds from the store going to support agency programs.

However, thanks to so many contributions over the past year, Opportunities is running out of space to store donated items and is looking to sell down some of its inventory at the special sale, Mrs. Howlett said.

Agency staff and volunteers moved numerous truckloads of merchandise to the former restaurant. Members of the Lewis County job readiness training program and other volunteers spent much of Tuesday working through a mountain of bags of clothing in preparation for the sale.

Anything left over will be given to the Watertown Urban Mission, Mrs. Howlett said.

Owner Terry J. Thisse, who has refurbished the building and is seeking a tenant to use it, donated use of the building for the four-day event, Mrs. Howlett said.
