Potsdam spikers outlast FA; M-W sweeps Gouverneur


POTSDAM - The Potsdam Central varsity girls volleyball team made a strong recovery from its first NAC West Division setback by outlasting East Division rival Franklin Academy in five sets on Wednesday.

“That was a tough loss for us against Edwards-Knox but the girls showed up for practice the next day and worked even harder to get ready for this match,” said coach Julia Pahler after the Lady Sandstoners rallied to claim the final two sets in turning back the Lady Huskies.

“I think we were all a little nervous before the match but the girls really put it all together tonight,” she added.

The Lady Huskies (13-3) built a 2-1 lead through the first three sets by scores of 25-19, 12-25, 25-22 before Potsdam battled back to tie the match with a 25-21 decision in the fourth then relayed that momentum into a 25-15 win in the decisive fifth set.

Victoria Mondragon led the Lady Sandstoners with 21 service points, including six aces, and seven kills. Elna Daby served up another 15 points while Sarah Vivlamore generated 10 points, four aces, one kill, 82 sets and 13 assists. Also making key contributions throughout the match were Erica Mason (9 points) 2 aces), Katie Burkes (8 points, 7 kills, 4 blocks) and Miranda Mangual (6 points, 7 kills, 1 block).

For the Lady Huskies, Rachel Lamica tallied 24 kills, 14 points, five aces and four blocks. Janelle Haden chipped in 11 points, four kills and two aces while Karissa Beaudry had 17 assist to go along with four service points.

Now 13-2 overall and 8-1 atop the West, the Lady Sandstoners will look to clinch sole possession of the NAC division banner this evening then they travel to Canton for their regular season finale starting at 5 p.m.


The other NAC volleyball match staged on Wednesday saw Madrid-Waddington sweep Gouverneur 25-13, 25-7, 25-23.

Dia Richards had 14 points and three kills in the winning effort. Ashley Curran added nine points and two sets. Seniors Hannah Austin (6 digs), Brittani Dawley (6 sets) and Janelle Trombley (5 digs) closed out their NAC careers with four service points each.

For the Wildcats, Mallory Austin produced 25 sets, three assists, six points, one ace and one kill while Raenelle Durham had three kills, two blocks, and two points. Autumn Ashley chipped in six sets, one assist, four points and one dig while Tee LaBrake added two points, one dig, one kill, and one ace.

The Lady Yellowjackets finished the regular season with a 5-11 overall record and will now gear up for the Section 10 Class D playoffs which get underway on Monday. They will likely be on the road against Edwards-Knox. Chateaugay, Brushton-Moira and Tupper Lake are the other three Class D squads.
