Sweet Adelines welcoming new members

WADDINGTON – They’ve got more style than a barbershop quartet and more sass than a church choir. They’re the ladies of the Sweet Adelines Acapella North Chorus.

Performing songs like “Kokomo” and “Dancing Queen” rearranged in barbershop quartet style, the group of 24 singers performs at nursing homes and public events throughout St. Lawrence County.

“We go where ever we’re needed,” Co-director Donna Kleis said Tuesday.

For its latest performance, the all a capella group will present an Acca-Awesome Adventure Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. in the Madrid-Waddington High School Auditorium.

The group, which has several members from St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Franklin and Lewis counties, is always looking for new members, Ms. Kleis said.

“We have members of all ages, from 12 to 88,” she said. “We’ll teach you everything you need to know.”

The women sing bass, baritone, lead and tenor.

The chorus, made up of bass, baritones, leads and tenors, practices once-a-week.

Patricia O. White, who sings baritone, joined the group in 1977, and is the group’s longest-standing member.

“It’s first and foremost an educational group,” Ms. White said. “It is a great way to learn about music and singing,”

One of her favorite places to perform is the Potsdam Christmas Tree lighting.

The group is one of many Sweet Adeline chapters in the country. Last year the group placed second in the Northern New York singing competition in Syracuse.

Saturday’s concert will raise money for the group’s annual expenses.

“It’s for our annual operating costs, which allow us to perform as much as we can,” Ms. Kleis said.

The concert’s preshow begins at 6:30 p.m.

Musical guests will include We Build Tomorrow and the Madrid-Waddington Select Chorus. Special preshow guests include Josh Barkley and the Madrid-Waddington Music students.

General admission is $10. The cost for students and seniors is $8 and Family is $25.

A costume contest will be held for all ages. Prizes include best couple/ pair, 70s or 80s retro and most original. There will be raffles and door prizes.

The singers are led by Mrs. Kleis and co-director Genine Gehret. Michelle Bresett serves as Assistant Director, Michele Weaver as President.
